Adoption
Adoption is when you carry your pregnancy to term and entrust an adoptive family to raise your child. This option can be highly rewarding because it brings great joy to a family longing for a baby, but it can also present emotional challenges for the birth mother.
There are three main types of adoption, and each option allows you to choose the details you’re comfortable with. Only you can decide if adoption is right for you, but learning all you can about the process will help you discover what’s best for you and your situation.
Open Adoption
Open adoption provides the most communication between you and the adoptive family. You can choose the adoptive family, how often you communicate, and the types of communication you prefer (phone, email, text, in-person, etc.). The adoptive family will know as much about you as you’re willing to share, and you will learn about them and the child. An open adoption plan lets you play a role in your child’s life.
Semi-Open Adoption
Semi-open adoption is similar to an open adoption but is more limited. With this option, there are usually no in-person visits, and communication takes place through a third party (like the adoption agency).
Closed Adoption
Closed adoption is the most private. With this option, the adoptive family won’t know any details about you (except minimal medical information). There also won’t be any contact between you and the adoptive family.
