You are already a supportive friend by asking this question. An unexpected pregnancy can bring a whirlwind of emotions. Your friend could be feeling joy, fear, guilt, and anger all at once. She needs the support of loving, caring friends like you.
Here are a few ideas to help you support her at this time. Thanks for caring.
Help Her Find the Resources She Needs
At Calaveras Pregnancy Center, we offer free and confidential pregnancy services to confirm her pregnancy. Encourage your friend to schedule an appointment at our Angels Camp location.
Our trained client advocates administer a free, professional-grade pregnancy test to ensure she gets accurate results. If her test is positive, we offer referrals for a free, onsite ultrasound provided by medical staff from Turlock Pregnancy and Health Center (TPHC).
An ultrasound helps protect her health and safety. It confirms her pregnancy’s viability (developing with a detectable heartbeat), location, and how far along she is.
Encourage Her With Words of Support
It’s hard not to comment on or judge her situation if you are a close friend, but remaining neutral is your best action plan. If possible, remind her of her strength and ability to tackle difficult situations.
Let her know you are there for her no matter what. Comment on her bravery and let her know she is not alone.
Practice Active Listening
Active listening means paying close attention to what your friend is saying. You may repeat her words back to her to make sure you understand what she said. Try asking relevant questions without judgment and be attuned to the feelings behind her words.
How Calaveras Pregnancy Center Can Help You and Your Friend
If your friend is unsure how to handle her unexpected pregnancy, we can review her options. She has three choices. We can give her specific information about each.
Give your friend our number (209-736-9600) or encourage her to schedule an appointment online. Come with her, if she would like. We’d love to meet both of you!
At Calaveras Pregnancy Center, we do not perform or refer abortions.
